The other day I received an email from a neighbor asking me to purchase a raffle ticket; it was a fundraiser for a major political party. I responded as follows:

Please remove me from any mailings, etc. that are anything ____________ (party name) related. Thank you.

Oh, by the way I hit reply to all. Now about 50 people knew my party affiliation – as if it was a shock.

Her response to me was “that was not very nice.”

Not very nice I thought? It said please. It said thank you. It was specific as to what type of information I no longer wish to receive. I thought it was direct, clear and concise. What is she whining about?

My response: “What wasn’t nice about my response? I do not think it is nice that you just add me to an email list for all to see; and the

only emails I ever get from you are politically motivated and asking for money.”

She responded with an apology (I’m Sorry with an exclamation point) and questioned if she was now being removed from the guest list for my “After the Holidays Party” each January.

From that exchange of words, I received two private emails from the original list applauding me for my response; and one scolding me for my behavior. So based on that random sample and my memory of statistics and higher mathematics; two-thirds of the list agrees with my position and hates receiving such emails. Or three people need their opinion to be heard?

But it got my juices going on what thought provoking comments I could write about. So in my never-ending battle to get you thinking from every angle, not just your own, here goes…………………………………

I could comment on how it is not a bad thing to toss out a little turmoil every so often just to keep people on their toes, stir up the pot, stand out from the crowd or get people thinking and involved. But I know you are already standing out from the crowd. I know you have created waves in your industry or organization. People know who you are. Right? Let’s face it, being the “Golden Child” is fun, but being the “Bad Boy” has its benefits too!

I could comment on how email communication can often lead people to get annoyed or pissed off at you when they really don’t know you. Let’s face it; without a doubt some of you reading this were thinking that the scenario was going to play out differently. I know you were thinking that I was going to blast her for exposing my email address to the world. I’ve got more important things to worry myself with; so instead I had some fun with my response. And who knows, my email address has my domain name, which might lead someone to my website; which may result in them passing my name along to a meeting planner or purchasing a product from my store? Perhaps having your email address visible is free marketing?

I could comment that maybe she did not know I was being playful and maybe she was annoyed that I replied to everyone on the list and maybe she really is worried that she is off the invite list!

I could comment on the fact that most people do not communicate when things annoy them, but instead have private little trashing sessions about you with co-workers, friends and family. Shame on those people.

I could comment on the fact that when people say things, even when they are being playful or funny, there is probably a hint of truth behind the zing.

I could comment that the three responses might have been other people being playful? Or maybe I did strike a nerve?

So which comments get you thinking? More importantly, which of those comments might get you to look at your relationships and interactions with people and perhaps lead you to react differently in your personal or professional life? Take a moment today to stop and pay attention to people interacting with each other; especially when a conversation takes an awkward turn. Was it really meant to become awkward or was it open to interpretation?

So I know you’re wondering if she is off the list.

Of course not! She knew I was just trying to create a stir and be playful. I knew her first response to me was to keep it going; which is why I call her a friend. As for the other three, I guess I’ll need to reread the above points and decide.

Yesterday she sent me one of those if-you-don’t-pass-this-along-to-ninety-six-of-your-closest-friends-you-will-die-a-horrible-death emails. I hit delete. At least it wasn’t asking for money.

Barbara, a young professional business owner in the consulting industry, was recently given an opportunity to receive a mentor and advisory board through XYZ Organization, a not-for-profit focused on helping women in the professional arena. Kathy, the woman selected to be her mentor has a thriving PR business and is very successful. As you can imagine, Barbara was thrilled about the opportunity to work with Kathy.

Their first telephone meeting went very well. They discussed the areas where Barbara needed the most support, like budgeting and marketing. Part of Kathy’s commitment as Barbara’s mentor was to assist her in putting together an advisory board of experts to assist with growing her business. Needless to say, Barbara was quite excited.

After receiving sample public relations (PR) and marketing plans to work with, Barbara quickly produced her own marketing and PR plans and eagerly delivered them to Kathy for feedback. To Barbara’s surprise, Kathy emailed back within a day with both documents fully edited and with track changes. While Barbara was certainly surprised to receive a fully edited document, she was happy to have support and mentorship. As a result, Barbara took action on all items Kathy suggested as quickly as possible.

Late one Friday afternoon, Barbara wanted to share a marketing email she and her team had created using Kathy’s suggestions that showcased a new product. Barbara mentioned that she was planning to send it out on Monday and was eager to share their work with her. Kathy’s response was not at all what Barbara had expected. Kathy assumed that Barbara wanted her to edit this document over the weekend and was quite irritated that she would make such a request.

It’s easy to see why Kathy came to this conclusion considering she had edited a document previously and Barbara mentioned the attached document would be sent out on Monday. While Barbara never asked for editing, she certainly appreciated it and was hoping to gain some feedback, even if only a few thoughts.

Unfortunately, before Barbara had a chance to clarify this misunderstanding, Kathy cc’d everyone from XYZ Organization responsible for setting up this mentoring program to let them all know that this mentoring relationship needed to be redefined and that her responsibilities as a mentor were unclear. After a series of misread and misunderstood interactions, XYZ Organization told Barbara to halt all conversations with Kathy until they could spend time teaching Barbara how to receive mentoring. Barbara made final attempts via email to apologize for stepping out of bounds. But she felt at this point that her emails were being misconstrued.

I recommended that she call the person in charge of the mentoring program and let her know that any further communications needed to take place by telephone. Barbara made the call and left a voice message.

Two weeks later, Barbara received an email from the president of XYZ Organization stating that after a cooling-down period, the committee would reconvene to let her know how they were planning to proceed. It will be interesting to see what happens to this relationship! As a woman entrepreneur in need of guidance and excited about the opportunity to work with a mentor, Barbara was even more confounded. While it would be easy to blame either Kathy or Barbara for an inability to communicate effectively, the real truth is, challenges like these are why so many mentoring programs fail.

Communication between young and seasoned professionals is not always as compatible as peanut butter and jelly, but usually just as different. In a mentoring relationship, it is common to have two people who come from different experiences, have a different outlook on the matters at hand and often communicate very differently.

1. Commodity Option Trading Introduction

What Are Commodity Options?

An option is a contract that gives you the right, but not the obligation, to either go long or go short the underlying futures contract at a pre-determined entry price on or before a specific date. It lets you take advantage of price moves in the futures markets without actually having a futures position.

There are two types of options, Call options and Put options.

The Call option gives you the right, but not the obligation, to go long the underlying commodity futures contract at a pre-specified entry price on or before a specific date. You would buy a Call option when you believe the futures price will increase.

A Put option gives you the right, but not the obligation, to go short the underlying commodity futures contract at a pre-specified entry price on or before a specific date. A Put option is used when you believe the futures price will decrease.

Commodity Option characteristics

Buying commodity Options have several characteristics which make them more attractive to traders. They include:

Limited Risk. You cannot lose more than the amount paid for the option.
Staying Power. You don’t run the risk of getting stopped out of a trade.
Profit Is Not Limited. If correct in your analysis, profit potential is not limited.
Quick Fills. You can quickly enter and exit markets at a reasonable price.
No Margin Calls. You won’t encounter a margin call on option positions.
No Limit Moves. Options are immune from the risk of limit moves.
Numerous Strike Price Selections. Options are available in a range of strike prices.
Lower Capital Requirements. Buying an option is less than the futures margin cost.
* Provide Trading Alternatives. Options can be used as a substitute for protective stop.

2. Common Options Basic Terms

The following terms are commonly used in option trading.

The “strike price” is the price that you may enter the underlying futures contract if you exercise the option. For Call options, the strike price is the entry price that has the right to go long the underlying commodity futures contract. For Put options, this is the entry price at which one has the right to go short the commodity.

The “option premium” is market-determined price of the option that you pay to purchase either a call option or a put option. It is a non-refundable cost that the option seller keeps, and is your maximum amount of risk in the market. The premium is quoted just like the price of the underlying futures contract; in cents, points, etc. Option premiums fluctuate daily due to market conditions.

Options have two separate components which together define the option’s premium. They are time value and intrinsic value.

“Time value” is the amount of time remaining before the option expires. “Intrinsic value” refers to how much the price of the underlying futures price is, relative to the strike price of the option. The option will have intrinsic value when the price of the futures contract is higher than the strike price of a call, or when the price of the futures contract is lower than the strike price of a put. Options with intrinsic value are referred to as in-the-money options.

All options are assigned an “expiration date” after which they are no longer valid for trading purposes. This is the last day that the option may be exercised. Frequently, this date will be 2-4 weeks before the underlying futures contract’s Last Trading Day (LTD), although some futures items synchronize the option expiration date with the futures contract LTD. The farther out into the future an option’s expiration date is, the more expensive the option will be (time = money).

3. Commodity Options Trading Analysis

First, you must analyze the futures market to identify the current (and likely future) price trend. This is what losers don’t do. There will be times when your analysis suggests that a commodity is ready to start a major move. But the margin may be too large, or it may be volatile and the futures contract may require a large stop-loss risk amount ($1,200 to $2,500 or more) to avoid getting easily stopped out and is an amount which your money management rules prohibit. In other instances, the margin may just be too high. In these cases, you can use an option if your money management rules permit its purchase.

Practical Rules for Selecting Options

After you have analyzed the markets, you must first determine how much you want to risk. Your money management plan will be part of this determination. You should also consider the margin required for a futures contract as compared to the premium paid for the option. With commodity futures contracts, the margin is a refundable deposit – if you are correct about the direction of the move. With options, the premium is a non-refundable cost. For speculators, options work best in volatile markets because you don’t get stopped out. They give you “staying power” – for a price.

Use the following items as a guide to help you in selecting a simple option position.

The option type (will you be trading a call option or a put option)
Buy an option with as close to 3 months before expiration as possible.
Buy an option within 3 strike prices away from being in the money.
Never risk more than $300 of the premium paid for the option.
When possible, buy an even multiple of options (i.e., 2, 4, 6, 8 options, etc.)

4. The Greeks

The term “greeks” is used to describe specific data values which are used by professional traders to analyze options. Top option traders know how changes in the greeks will affect the profitability of their trades and adjust their trades accordingly. This information will help you define the risk of an option trade. The expected profit or loss of an option is based on changes in market price, time until expiration, as well as changes in implied option volatility.

Note: The only way to get the greeks for individual options or for option spreads is to use an option software program such as OptionVue, or from a broker who uses one. Manually calculating these values daily is too cumbersome.

Delta

Delta tells you how much of a change to expect – either an increase or decrease – in the option’s premium when the underlying futures price moves. The expected price change in the option’s premium is expressed as a percent of the change in the price of a full futures contract. The Delta of an option is not fixed, but changes with variations in the futures price. As the futures price gets closer to the strike price, the value of Delta increases.

Gamma

The Gamma tells you how much the option’s Delta will change when the underlying futures price changes. As the futures price moves, the Delta changes, and Gamma can tell you how much change to expect in the Delta. If you start out with a Delta of 0.50 in a call option, a rally in the underlying futures price will cause Delta to increase.

Gamma tells you how much you would expect Delta to change on a 100 point move in the futures. Gamma will always be positive if you are long premium in either calls or puts, and negative if short.

Theta

This value tells you how much the option’s price will decline in one day if the future price does not move at all. It is a reflection of time value loss and is expressed as a dollar amount. Theta is a variable that can be affected either by changes in the futures price, time left until expiration, and changes in implied volatility.

Vega

This value tells you how much the option price will change if implied volatility changes. It is the “sensitivity” of the option’s price to volatility. Vega is expressed as a dollar amount. A positive Vega indicates that a rise in implied volatility will benefit your position. Vega tells you how much you can expect the theoretical value of an option to change based on a 1 percent change in implied volatility.

Prepare to be shocked.

When you discover the biggest stock market secret of all, it could undermine everything you believe about trading in stocks. It could also completely turn your trading around by removing the “gambling” element almost entirely, and turning your losses into profits overnight.

Whether you’re currently an active investor or not, you’ll know the basics of how most people play the stock market. It can be summed up in two words.

Buy. Pray.

You might laugh, but you know it’s true!

They get a ‘hot tip’ from a newspaper, a tip sheet, a guy in a bar, wherever, and they go ahead and buy the stock. Then, they wait and hope and pray that it goes up, and IF it does, they sell and collect a profit.

It’s not exactly what you’d call a strategy, now is it?

There are, of course, a lot of traders out there who are using much cleverer strategies than “Buy and Pray”. They might use charts and technical analysis and work their trades on moving averages, Fibonacci lines, Bollinger bands and so on. They might go short occasionally to profit from an expected downward move, but the “gambling” element is still there – decide which direction the stock is likely to move in, and take a position on that basis.

If you’re right, fantastic! If you’re wrong, it’s more of your trading capital down the tubes, and back to the drawing board for the next trade.

Why do people trade this way?

Well, I’ve done quite an in-depth study of this, and here’s what I’ve found. Most people trade a direction because they think they’re right (of course!) and because they don’t know any other way of trading.

Even more fundamentally, though, there is an underlying belief that says,

“There are people in the world who can accurately and consistently predict the direction of any given stock or market. If I work at it hard enough, I’ll eventually become one of them.”

(And the nagging question here, of course, is whether “eventually” will come around before the trading capital runs out!)

So here’s the biggest stock market secret…

NO ONE has the ability to accurately and consistently predict the direction of any given stock or market, and so it doesn’t matter how long you trade for, you’ll NEVER attain this ability!

I did warn you, didn’t I? You might want to re-read that a couple of times, just to let it sink in.

And then you’ll find a question emerging from the gloom – So, now what??

Well, if no one can predict the direction of the market, how to those ‘in the know’ trade? The answer is perhaps the second-biggest stock market secret.

The reality is, the “smart money” does NOT trade the direction of the market. The “smart money” trades only in situations where a big move is likely – and the “smart money” doesn’t care which direction that move takes, because they’re positioned to make a profit whether the stock falls or rises!
